Red flags of a bad client
Most bad clients show signs before the contract is signed. Here are the patterns experienced agency owners learn to watch for.
They haggle hard before any work exists
A prospect who fights every line of a proposal before you’ve delivered anything will fight every invoice after.
Vague scope, urgent timeline
“We’ll figure out the details later” plus “we needed this yesterday” is how scope creep and unpaid overtime begin. Pin scope down in writing first.
No paper trail
Refusing a contract, a deposit, or written sign-off is the single biggest predictor of non-payment.
Disrespect early
Rudeness to you or your team during the sales process does not improve once they’re paying.
Check before you sign
Search the company on Blacklisted Client and ask for references. Five minutes of checking saves months of chasing.
